ABC is prepared to start revamped ‘World News’

The new version of ABC’s “World News Tonight” officially premieres tonight with co-anchor Bob Woodruff reporting from Tehran, launching a new format that will likely have him and co-anchor Elizabeth Vargas in different cities on most nights.

Vargas, who spent a week last month in Iraq, will anchor the broadcast from New York this week while Woodruff reports on Iran’s nuclear weapons program, among other topics. The two were named to replace the late anchor Peter Jennings in early December.

Today also marks the start of the network’s new live afternoon webcast, “World News Now,” which will offer viewers a preview of the evening news every weekday at noon on wnt.abcnews.com; the network’s digital channel, ABC News Now; and wireless devices. On Thursday, ABC will begin airing two live versions of the evening news for West Coast audiences, as well.
