New York Fashion Week spring 2014: Barbara Tfank review

NEW YORK -- Los Angeles-based designer Barbara Tfank showed her collection at a gallery space in Chelsea, where the walls were empty, allowing her vision to shine.

The inspiration: “It’s all about my love of black-and-white movies, and my love as a child of fashion magazines,” she said. “So it’s two stories.”

Key pieces: Sultry black sateen sheath dress with cage detail at the neckline (paging Christina Hendricks). White lace crop-top over a black-and-white lace, short A-line skirt. Black pique jacket with slits at the neckline, worn with black-and-white floral A-line skirt. Coral and pink poppy print short-sleeve dress with coral insets at the bodice. Black embroidered split-front shift.

The verdict: Tfank, known for her feminine silhouettes and exquisite, hand-designed textiles, is a designer who stands apart from the trend-a-minute fashion fray, introducing change slowly and deliberately. This season, she added embroidery and lace to her creations in a lovely way, without compromising her laser-sharp vision and incomparable quality.
