Gateway Inc. reported a first-quarter loss after sales fell and it invested in new products. The results missed expectations, sending the shares down in extending trading. The loss was $8.58 million, or 2 cents a share, compared with a loss of $12.3 million, or 3 cents, a year earlier, Irvine-based Gateway said. Sales fell 6.4% to $1.01 billion.

Leap Wireless International Inc., a mobile-phone service provider under the Cricket and Jump brands, reported its third consecutive loss on costs to expand into more markets. The first-quarter loss was $8.12 million, or 12 cents a share, compared with a profit of $17.7 million, or 29 cents, the year before, the San Diego company said. Sales rose 46% to $389.4 million.
