Condition upgraded for boy wounded in Mid-City drive-by shooting

A child shot near his heart in Mid-City was upgraded from critical to serious condition Tuesday, Los Angeles police said.

The 7-year-old boy, who police initially reported as being older, was shot as he was sitting in a car about 11 p.m. Monday in the 1900 block of South Corning Street. According to police, an unknown number of men in a white vehicle drove up, unleashed a barrage of gunfire at the rear of the car and sped off.

The boy was hit at least once and his mother was grazed in the leg, CBS-TV Channel 2 reported. The mother’s boyfriend was also there and was shot in the back, KTLA-TV Channel 5 reported. The mother and her boyfriend were listed in stable condition, police said.

The group had just come back from the laundromat when they were shot, according to KTLA.

NBC-TV Channel 4 reported that up to three men may have been involved in the shooting. It was not immediately clear if the incident was gang-related, police said.

There have been four homicides this year and 152 violent crimes in Mid-City in the last six months, according to the L.A. Times crime-mapping database.
